History of the Mass Media in the United States: An Encyclopedia by Margaret A. Blanchard, History of the Mass Media in the United States: An Encyclopedia examines the ways in which the mass media affect American society and also the ways in which the mass media are in turn affected by societal developments in the United States. Mass media, for the purposes of this work, are defined as: newspapers, advertising, books and magazines, public relations, motion pictures, radio, television, cable television, and photography or photojournalism. The time period covered by the Encyclopedia is from 1690 (the founding of the first American newspaper) to 1995 - more than 300 years of mass media history. The Encyclopedia is comprised of more than 475 alphabetically arranged entries of from 500 to 5,000 words; some 200 scholars have contributed to the work. Entries range from key areas of newspaper history, to major court cases and important legislation, to the concerns of ethnic and special interest groups. The editor and her contributors have also taken particular care to examine the technological, legal, legislative, economic and political developments that have affected the media. History of the Mass Media in the United States: An Encyclopedia is meant to appeal to a broad range of users, including students, scholars and researchers, as well as members of the general public interested in knowing more about the role of the mass media in American life, past and present.
Music history of the United States during the colonial era - The influence of the music of African-Americans has most set the United States apart from that of Western Europe. While African Americans were looked down on by the majority of European-Americans and their culture was denigrated as low class, if not semi-barbaric as late as the 1930s, the music was wildly popular with the general public. United Nations General Assembly observers - In addition to the current 191 member states, the United Nations welcomes several other international agencies, entities, and one non-member state (for several years prior to their admission after a referendum in 2002, Switzerland was also an observer state). Observers have the right to speak at meetings, but not vote on resolutions. List of emergency special sessions of the United Nations General Assembly - An emergency special session is an unscheduled meeting of the United Nations General Assembly to make urgent decisions over a particular issue. They are typically rare — a fact reflected in there being only 10 in the history of the United Nations. History of Michigan State University - The history of the Michigan State University (MSU) dates back to 1855, when the Michigan Legislature established the Agricultural College of the State of Michigan. As the first agricultural college in the United States, the school served as a prototype for future Land Grant institutions under the Morrill Act.
